Sleep Standard Deviation Survey Results 2021

Seiji Nishino

Continuing from the previous year's survey, some interesting results were revealed. Those with the poorest sleep quality were "those who work from home once or twice a week." Those who work from home almost every day and those who have never worked from home had better sleep quality, suggesting that a regular lifestyle is essential to ensure good sleep quality, and that those who work from home irregularly may have found it difficult to maintain a regular lifestyle. Additionally, the sleep deviation scores were particularly low for those who were unwell due to contracting an infectious disease such as COVID-19 or influenza, those who were suspected of having COVID-19, and those who stayed in hotels to recuperate.

Even before the COVID-19 outbreak, seasonal influenza was killing 20,000 to 60,000 people every year in the United States, and in relation to countermeasures against it, the fact that sufficient, good quality sleep can prevent cold and influenza infections has been emphasized. It is interesting that similar results have now been obtained in Japan, and it is thought that it is important to boost immunity by leading a regular life, maintaining a rhythm of life, and getting good quality sleep, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This mindset is just as important even after vaccinations have begun, and even if you receive the COVID-19 vaccine, if you do not get enough sleep, it may be difficult for antibodies to be produced, and infection prevention may not be sufficient.
