Sleep Deviation Value Research Results Announcement 2021

Seiji Nishino

Following last year's survey, several interesting results have been revealed. The worst sleep quality was observed in "people who work from home 1-2 times a week." Compared to those who work from home almost every day and those who never work from home, the sleep quality was better. This suggests that a regular lifestyle is essential for ensuring good sleep quality, and those who work from home irregularly might have difficulty maintaining a consistent daily rhythm. Furthermore, in relation to infectious diseases like COVID-19 and influenza, people who experienced poor health, those suspected of having COVID-19, and especially those who underwent hotel recuperation, showed particularly low sleep deviation values.

Especially in the US, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, seasonal influenza caused approximately 20,000 to 60,000 deaths annually. In relation to countermeasures, the importance of sufficient and good quality sleep in preventing colds and influenza infections has been emphasized. It is interesting that similar results were obtained in Japan this time. During the pandemic, it is particularly important to strive for a regular lifestyle, maintain a consistent daily rhythm, and get good quality sleep to boost immunity. Even with the start of vaccinations, this awareness remains equally important, as insufficient sleep after COVID-19 vaccination can hinder antibody production and potentially lead to inadequate infection prevention.
