The term "sleep tech" has recently been featured in news on TV and online. Many of you may have heard of it before.
However, we often hear comments like, "I kind of understand what sleep tech is, but what exactly is it?" and "What kinds of products and services are available?"
So, this time, to answer these questions, we will explain "what sleep tech is" and "sleep tech products recommended by the editorial department," incorporating the results of BrainSleep's sleep survey, "Sleep Deviation Score."
What is Sleep Tech?
Sleep tech refers to devices, systems, and services that utilize IT/AI technologies such as sensors and apps to analyze quantitatively acquired data from the environment before sleep, during sleep onset, during awakenings, and upon waking (getting up). The goal is to output feedback in some form to "improve sleep deprivation" and achieve "high-quality sleep." It's a combination of "Sleep" and "Tech" from technology.
While such sleep improvement technologies were previously primarily used in research institutions and medical facilities, the penetration of internet technology and the widespread use of smartphones and smartwatches have made it easy for individuals to monitor their own sleep status. As a result, various products and services beyond bedding, home appliances, and apps have emerged, including wearable devices and sleep improvement/support services.
Sleep Tech Market Size
In 2021, the global sleep tech device market exceeded 1.8 trillion JPY and is expected to grow further, with projections to expand to 8.1 trillion JPY by 2030. Currently, North America accounts for over 42% of sleep tech market sales. *1
In Japan, the market size for devices and services utilizing sleep tech developed to approximately 460 billion JPY in 2021, accounting for about 30% of the total sleep market, including bedding. *2
Japan's Average Sleep Duration and Sleep Debt
Here's data on sleep in Japan from BrainSleep's large-scale annual sleep survey, "Sleep Deviation Score." Changes in Japan's average sleep duration and sleep debt: Average sleep duration has increased for two consecutive years, and sleep debt is also showing signs of improvement.
BrainSleep's 2020 survey reported Japan's average sleep duration as 6 hours and 27 minutes, and the 2021 survey as 6 hours and 43 minutes. This year's survey found Japan's average sleep duration to be 6 hours and 48 minutes, marking two consecutive years of increased sleep duration.
BrainSleep has been conducting similar surveys consistently for three years since its establishment in 2019, and Japan's sleep duration is on an upward trend. However, the average sleep duration in OECD member countries is 8 hours and 25 minutes, meaning Japan's sleep duration remains among the lowest in the world. Therefore, it is essential to incorporate sleep tech to achieve higher quality sleep.
Penetration and Usage Rates of Sleep Tech in Japan?
Reference: From Sleep Deviation Score Survey Results 2022
Only 5.6% of the 10,000 respondents use apps to improve sleep quality, and 4.3% use gadgets, indicating that the penetration of sleep tech among the general public has not progressed significantly.
On the other hand, 15.4% of respondents expressed interest in incorporating apps and gadgets in the future as a way to improve sleep quality, indicating high interest in sleep tech.
From these survey results, it can be inferred that many people are interested in sleep tech but are unsure what items are available.
