Brain Sleep has evolved its comforter lineup with Perfect Warm, Perfect Warm EX, and Perfect Warm Dual. And now, the latest model, which can be called the "ultimate comforter" that we have pursued for many years, has been born.
This time, I'd like to talk about the "Brain Sleep Comforter Perfect Warm EX (2025 latest model)."
The Challenge to Create a Comforter that Exceeds the Limits of Down Quilts
The concept for the Perfect Warm series actually began during my previous job. When I was involved in product development at my previous bedding manufacturer, I was involved in developing synthetic fiber comforters that were not made of down.
At that time, down quilts dominated the market, and the market for synthetic fiber comforters was very small, with low unit prices. No matter how much effort we put into developing a product, it was difficult to find a place for it to succeed.
That's when I knocked on Brain Sleep's door.
Originally, it had become difficult to source down raw materials for over 20 years, and along with that, the price of down had soared. I predicted that down quilts, with their dwindling supply and rising prices, would be replaced by functional synthetic fiber comforters in the near future.
"I want to create a comforter that surpasses down."
That thought was the origin of Perfect Warm's development.
From Thermos Structure to Granular Cotton - A Long-Term Search for Materials
The first-generation Perfect Warm adopted a "thermos structure." This structure involved layering sheet-like cotton with different functions and sandwiching them with outer fabric. The concept was to control heat and trap warm air like a thermos. This idea had been vaguely in my mind since my previous job, and it was a very warm and good product.
In the subsequent Perfect Warm EX (old version), we updated the functions of each layer by changing the fibers and composition of these sheets, achieving a warmer, cleaner, and more comfortable comforter.
On the other hand, as a developer, I constantly pursued better products and aimed for further improvement in comfort. In particular, I wondered if I could surpass down quilts in terms of body fit and comfort. Fit is an important function for retaining warmth and comprehensively affects overall comfort, so I wanted to improve this further.
That's when I thought of granular cotton made from synthetic fibers. If I could create a shape that was large and contained a lot of air, like mother goose down, but with synthetic fibers, I could achieve even better fit and warmth.
Two and a Half Years of Trial and Error - A Breakthrough Born from Inspiration
So, I started working seriously on developing granular cotton. However, it was much more difficult than I had imagined.
In terms of down quality, the larger the down, the more air it contains, and the warmer it becomes. I tried to create large granular cotton to reproduce the large shape of mother goose down with synthetic fibers, but the fibers became progressively thicker, making the texture hard and heavy. And, worst of all, each individual piece became independent and flaky, did not intertwine, so it didn't get warm, and the comfort was poor.
I kept hitting this wall for nearly two years. Day after day, I consulted with factories and OEM partners countless times, made prototypes, and then returned to square one, thinking, "This isn't good enough." Honestly, there were times when I almost gave up.
At that moment, a memory from my previous job suddenly came back to me. When I was developing granular cotton at my previous bedding manufacturer, I had blended several sizes of granular cotton, and I remembered that they intertwined well.
"That's right! I just need to entwine grains of different sizes!"
This inspiration became a turning point in the development.
The Birth of the Patented Technology "Carbonano Down" - Quantum-Level Technological Innovation
The basic concept of Carbonano Down is a structure that traps warm air by randomly forming and intertwining particles of various sizes.
Furthermore, this Carbonano Down incorporates innovative technology. It uses quantum dot technology to knead special carbon, finely crushed to nano-level or smaller, into the fibers. This is a patented, unique technology that cannot be easily imitated.
The completed Carbonano Down achieved 10 different functions. A comparison with down is as follows:
Innovative Quilt Structure - A Comfort Exceeding Down Quilts
With the completion of Carbonano Down, our ideal material, we were able to achieve a completely different quilt structure from the conventional EX.
The conventional EX had a quilt that penetrated top and bottom, as the sheet-like cotton was sandwiched inside the fabric and then quilted from above.
However, in this latest version, we first create three-dimensional sections in the outer fabric and form individual boxes. Carbonano Down is then mechanically filled into each section. This is the same three-dimensional quilting method as down quilts, and it is a very labor-intensive process, but it results in a two-layer twin quilt that provides volume and a structure that prevents heat from escaping through the quilt seams.
This three-dimensional quilt structure allowed us to achieve a level of fit, softness, and comfort that was previously unattainable with conventional comforters and surpasses down quilts.
Also Achieves Lightweight - Multi-functional yet Light, Truly an Ideal Comforter
The conventional EX was a "comprehensive technique" that used multiple types of cotton, each with a different function. However, Carbonano Down can achieve multiple functions with a single material, eliminating the need for unnecessary materials.
As a result, we were able to reduce the product's weight. A truly ideal comforter, multi-functional yet lightweight, was born.
Over 30 Prototypes - Uncompromising Pursuit of Quality
During the development period, we made over 30 prototypes in the form of comforters alone. Even a slight change in the blend led to a new prototype, which was always tested by actually using it at home.
One room in my house became a prototype room, with various prototypes stacked up year-round. All prototypes are actually used and washed. We find improvement points one by one and make repeated corrections. Ultimately, we strive to improve quality by conducting all kinds of tests at external testing agencies.
My family also tried them without hesitation, and sometimes I received harsh feedback like, "This is no good at all." However, such straightforward opinions from an amateur's perspective were indispensable for improving product quality.
During the development of Perfect Cool in the summer, we compared prototypes with competing products and were told, "The competitor's is much better," which was frustrating. However, it was precisely because of such harsh evaluations that we were able to create truly good products.
Finally Complete - A Comforter Close to My Ideal Form
It took a long time, two and a half to three years, to adjust the intertwining and particle size of Carbonano Down, but finally, the ideal comforter was completed.
It eliminates the drawbacks of down quilts and achieves warmth and comfort that surpass down. It is multi-functional yet lightweight, with a comfortable fit to the body. I can confidently say that it is a comforter close to its perfect form for me.
Key points for a comforter include warmth, breathability, cleanliness, comfort, and storage, among many others. If it doesn't excel in all these aspects, it cannot surpass down, nor can it achieve customer satisfaction. The Perfect Warm EX using Carbonano Down achieves all these points at a high level.
Finally - Always Challenging
We have proceeded with development based on animal welfare and the trend toward an animal-free society. We have also improved the actual drawbacks of down quilts, giving birth to Carbonano Down, a next-generation filling that surpasses down. Moving forward, we will always strive to nurture Carbonano Down as an alternative to down and to develop products that allow people to spend a comfortable year without relying on animal fibers.
