Brain Sleep's Sleep Deviation Score® survey, targeting 10,000 people across all 47 prefectures (allocated by gender, age, and prefecture), revealed that 71.3% of respondents look at a computer, smartphone, or tablet screen (hereinafter "LCD screen") almost every day before sleep. Including those who look at an LCD screen three or more days a week, the number rises to 84.1%.
Breaking down the results by demographic, 20-something women reported looking at an LCD screen almost every day at the highest rate, 85.2%, followed by 30-something women at 81.1%. These results indicate that looking at an LCD screen before bed has become commonplace for most Japanese people, and particularly young women tend to look at LCD screens more frequently before sleep.
The average sleep duration for those who answered they do not have a habit of looking at an LCD screen before bed was 6 hours and 54 minutes, while for those who answered three or more days a week, the average sleep duration was 6 hours and 46 minutes, an 8-minute shorter result.
Regarding the sleep deviation score, those who answered no had an average of 56.3, while those who answered three or more days a week had an average of 49.2, indicating that looking at an LCD screen before bed leads to shorter sleep duration and decreased sleep quality.
It has long been said that blue light inhibits melatonin secretion and thus negatively affects sleep, but recently, features to suppress blue light, such as night mode, have become available.
The bigger problem is that the brain cannot relax due to games, internet surfing, or work emails, making it difficult to switch to sleep mode due to over-tension and over-arousal, rather than blue light itself. This tendency is particularly common among women who multitask. Try to choose content that allows your brain to relax before bed, and try to avoid receiving messages or emails at night.
