How many people are recommended for a double bed?
From the names, you might assume that a single bed is for one person and a double bed is for two, but this is not always the case.
While a double bed can accommodate two people, it's not twice the size of a single bed, so most people find it a bit cramped for two adults.

The average shoulder width for Japanese people is said to be around 44cm for men and 39cm for women. When sleeping with arms slightly outstretched, it's about 60cm for men and 55cm for women.
To turn over smoothly, you need an additional 20cm of space on each side. This means men need about 100cm (60 + 20 + 20cm) and women need about 95cm (55 + 20 + 20cm) of width.
A double bed is generally 140cm wide, so there isn't much space for two adults to turn over, and sleeping in it daily can feel a bit cramped.
Who is a double bed suitable for?
While I mentioned that two adults might find it a bit cramped, double beds are actually often used by couples. Double beds are suitable for those who want to turn over freely by themselves, those who want an exceptionally spacious bed, or those who want to place a luxurious bed in a large bedroom.
Furthermore, compared to larger queen or king sizes, there are more ready-made mattress types and bedding such as sheets available, making it also recommended for those who care about materials and designs.
Who a double bed is not suitable for?
If you place a bed that is too large for the size of your bedroom, you may not have enough space when using other furniture, so it is not recommended for those living in houses with smaller bedrooms.
Also, those planning to move should be cautious. Moving even a single bed is challenging, but a large bed like a double bed requires significant effort to transport and disassemble. If two people are using a double bed and one of them is large, choosing a bed larger than a double or placing two single beds will allow for more comfortable sleep.

How to choose a double bed
Double beds come in various shapes, materials, and functionalities. Here are three key points to consider when choosing a comfortable double bed.
1: Frame shape
Check what types of frame and headboard (the board at the head of the bed) shapes are available.
Flat type
The flat type has a flat headboard. There are also types where the headboard is angled, allowing you to recline against it and relax.
Cabinet type
The cabinet type has shelves on the headboard. You can place smartphones, remotes, glasses, and other items there.
Low type/Floor type
Beds with short legs are called low-type, while those with the entire frame placed directly on the floor are called floor-type.
Both types have a low bed height, which makes the room feel more spacious and open, and also has the benefit of reducing the risk of injury if you fall.
Slatted type
The slatted type has a bottom surface made of slats arranged at regular intervals, similar to a traditional "sunoko" (Japanese slatted platform). Its characteristic feature is good ventilation as air can circulate through the gaps. This allows moisture to escape, preventing mold growth, making it perfectly suited for Japan's humid climate.

Wood frame

Faux leather frame

Comparing the fitted sheet and duvet, while their lengths are the same, the duvet is 50cm wider. Therefore, when purchasing covers, make sure to check not only "single" or "semi-double" but also whether it's for a fitted sheet or a duvet.
