Brain Sleep Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Atsushi Hirota; hereinafter referred to as "Brain Sleep") has launched a "Sleep x Reading" project in collaboration with Nippon Shuppan Hanbai Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Keiji Okumura; hereinafter referred to as "Nippan") and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Naoki Shibuya; hereinafter referred to as "NTT East Group"), and conducted a verification of the effect of reading before bedtime on sleep (hereinafter referred to as "this verification"). In addition, a bookstore fair in collaboration with Nippan and Brain Sleep will be held at nine stores from Monday, July 3, 2023. Background of this initiative Brainsleep develops products based on sleep medicine, provides accurate sleep information, and supports the acquisition of accurate evidence on sleep in order to solve the sleep issues in Japan, where the sleep time is the shortest among OECD member countries. In addition, in order to get more people interested in sleep, Brainsleep has collaborated with other companies to verify the effectiveness of the relationship between familiar topics such as "fragrance," "sauna," and "music" and sleep. Recently, at the request of Nippan, which aims to create new opportunities for reading, we conducted an investigation into the impact of reading before bedtime on sleep. Verification Overview and Results In this study, we investigated the effect of reading before bed on sleep using the following methods. [Verification Overview] Objective: To examine the effect of reading before bedtime on sleep. Test method: Crossover test Measurement items: Activity level, questionnaire evaluation using the OSA Sleep Questionnaire (MA version)*1 using the VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) method Comparison: Group 2 who read before going to bed and Group 3 who engaged in daily life *1 A statistical scale of sleep sensation, a sleep evaluation method proposed by the Japan Sleep Improvement Council. *2 The books used for the verification were selected by the book director of Nippan based on their own index. *3 In this test, using a smartphone before going to bed is considered to be daily life. Reference: https://brain-sleep.com/news/magazine/sleepdeviationvalue-nl1/ [Verification results] Result 1: Objective data from an activity monitor Among people who have issues with sleep, the group who read before going to sleep tended to have a reduced number of times and duration of awakenings*4 compared to the group who went about their daily lives. *4 Time and number of awakenings during sleep: The time from falling asleep to the last awakening the next morning (sleep time) during which you were awake and the number of times you were awake Result 2: Subjective data from a questionnaire using VAS Subjective evaluations of sleep were compared using a questionnaire evaluation using the OSA Sleep Questionnaire, a psychological scale for evaluating one's own sleep upon waking. Of the following five sleep factors, it was confirmed that the group who "read before bed" scored significantly higher in "2. Falling asleep and maintaining sleep" than the group who engaged in "daily life." 1. Morning sleepiness: How alert you are when you wake up 2. Falling asleep and staying asleep: how easily you fell asleep and whether you were able to sleep steadily without waking up during the night 3. Dreams/sleep: Did you sleep deeply and soundly? 4. Fatigue recovery: Do you feel refreshed when you wake up? 5. Sleep time: Did you get enough sleep? [Verification and Consideration] In this study, both subjective and objective evaluations showed a tendency for items related to waking up during the night to improve, suggesting the possibility that reading before bedtime may contribute to improving sleep quality. In a follow-up survey conducted on subjects after this study, 68% answered that "I felt calm after reading," suggesting that reading before bed may lead to relaxation of the mind and body, which may have influenced sleep.
