Brain Sleep Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Atsushi Hirota; hereinafter "Brain Sleep") conducted a study (hereinafter "this study") on pillow materials and sleep quality. This study compared "Brain Sleep Pillow," our main product, with urethane pillows (hereinafter "general functional pillows"), which are widely used in Japan for functional pillows. In this study, in addition to improvements in subjective sleep evaluation, an increase in the proportion of deep sleep during the "golden 90 minutes" was observed when using the Brain Sleep Pillow, suggesting that changing pillows may lead to improved sleep quality. * **Background of the Study** Brain Sleep is working to solve Japan's sleep problems, where the sleep duration is the shortest among OECD member countries, through sleep research in collaboration with experts, development of original products, and consulting for companies and clinics. Brain Sleep believes that for modern people who tend not to get enough sleep, it is important to improve not only the quantity but also the quality of sleep. While it is said that reviewing bedding, including pillows, leads to an improvement in the sleep environment, there is not much scientific data focusing on pillows and sleep quality. This time, we conducted a study using Brain Sleep Pillow and general functional pillows to examine how differences in pillow materials affect sleep quality. * **Content and Results of This Study** Subjects: 20 men and women aged 20-50 Test method: Crossover study Measurement items: Activity level, brain waves, and questionnaire evaluation using VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) method (OSA Sleep Inventory)* *A common sleep evaluation method proposed by the Japanese Society of Sleep Improvement, which statistically scales sleep sensation. Verification results: The following results were confirmed from this study, suggesting that using the Brain Sleep Pillow may lead to an improvement in sleep quality. **① Increase in the proportion of the deepest sleep during the "golden 90 minutes" immediately after falling asleep.** **② Improvement in sleep efficiency due to shortening of the time from going to bed until falling asleep and the time from final awakening until getting out of bed .** **③ Reduction in sleepiness upon waking, and a実感 of ease of falling asleep, sleep maintenance, and fatigue recovery.** *In the figures, Brain Sleep Pillow is referred to as BS Pillow. **Result ①: Increase in the proportion of the deepest sleep during the "golden 90 minutes" immediately after falling asleep** Sleep consists of deep sleep "non-REM sleep" and shallow sleep "REM sleep," which alternate repeatedly. People generally repeat REM sleep and non-REM sleep 4 to 5 times in cycles of approximately 90 minutes during one night's sleep. In this study, sleep stages during sleep were determined using an electroencephalograph. As a result, the proportion of the deepest sleep (non-REM sleep stage 3 (hereinafter "S3")) in the first cycle ("golden 90 minutes"), which affects sleep quality, significantly increased to 38.1 ± 3.8% with the Brain Sleep Pillow, compared to 30.5 ± 3.7% with general functional pillows. **Result ② Improved sleep efficiency due to shortened sleep latency and sleep offset latency** Sleep latency , an indicator of how easily one falls asleep, significantly decreased to 10.5 ± 1.2 minutes with the Brain Sleep Pillow, compared to 17.8 ± 1.9 minutes with general functional pillows. Furthermore, sleep offset latency , an indicator of how refreshed one wakes up, also significantly decreased to 3.6 ± 0.5 minutes with the Brain Sleep Pillow, compared to 8.4 ± 0.9 minutes with general functional pillows. Due to the shortened sleep latency and sleep offset latency, sleep efficiency also significantly improved to 85.9 ± 1.9% with the Brain Sleep Pillow, compared to 81.7 ± 2.3% with general functional pillows. **Result ③: "Sleepiness upon waking," "difficulty falling asleep and maintaining sleep," and "fatigue recovery" were perceived.** In a questionnaire evaluation using the OSA Sleep Inventory, a psychological scale that evaluates one's sleep upon waking, subjective evaluations of sleep were compared. Among the following five sleep factors, the Brain Sleep Pillow scored significantly higher than general functional pillows in "sleepiness upon waking," "difficulty falling asleep and maintaining sleep," and "fatigue recovery." 1. Sleepiness upon waking: How clear-headed one is upon waking. 2. Falling asleep and maintaining sleep: How easily one falls asleep and whether one sleeps stably without waking up in the middle of the night. 3. Dreaming: Whether one slept deeply and soundly. 4. Fatigue recovery: Whether one feels refreshed upon waking. 5. Sleep duration: Whether the sleep duration was sufficient. **◆What is the "golden 90 minutes" that determines sleep quality?** Brain Sleep refers to the period of approximately 90 minutes immediately after falling asleep, during which the deepest non-REM sleep occurs, as the "golden 90 minutes." During these 90 minutes, five important physiological phenomena for sleep are particularly active: "brain and body rest," "memory organization and consolidation," "hormone balance adjustment," "immune system boost," and "removal of brain waste products." What is important for sleep is not just "time but also quality." For Japanese people, who tend not to get enough sleep, taking deep and prolonged sleep during the initial 90 minutes of sleep can lead to an improvement in sleep quality. **** **◆Features of the Brain Sleep Pillow, which cools the brain with an emphasis on the "golden 90 minutes"** In addition to the "golden 90 minutes," when the deepest non-REM sleep occurs, it is also important to maintain appropriate temperature and humidity within the bedding for good quality sleep. The unique material, made of over 90% air, prevents heat and moisture from accumulating during sleep, creating a comfortable sleep environment. **** Developed with meticulous attention to both design and material based on sleep medicine. Provides a comfortable sleep environment tailored to you, using 100% recyclable and sustainable materials. Designed with a 3-layer x 7-gradation structure It has a rational structure with three types of resins with different fiber structures stacked: an "adjustment layer" that fits the size and weight of the head, a "support layer" that firmly supports the head and neck, and a "base layer" that allows air to escape from below. The neck area is soft and easy to sink into, while both ends are slightly firmer to fit well even when sleeping on your side, making it easy to turn over.
