Brain Sleep Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Kosuke Michibata; hereinafter "Brain Sleep"), in collaboration with East Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (hereinafter "NTT East"), with whom it has a technical partnership, aims to resolve Japan's sleep issues by bringing together their respective cutting-edge ICT technologies and involving various partner companies. As one of our new sleep improvement solutions, we conducted an efficacy verification of a meditation program provided by TRUE NATURE MEDITATION LLC. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; Representative Partner: Yuki Kawazu). As a result of the eight-week efficacy verification, improvements were observed not only in Sleep Deviation Score® and sleep duration, but also in productivity, daytime sleepiness, and stress levels. Efficacy Verification Details This efficacy verification was conducted with the cooperation of employees from Suzuki Motor Corporation (hereinafter "Suzuki"). The details of the implementation are as follows: 1. Selection of Target Group: Identification of individuals with sleep issues (1) Acquired Sleep Deviation Score*1 for 89 volunteers within Suzuki. (2) From the above 89 individuals, 9 individuals with severe sleep issues and particularly low Sleep Deviation Scores were selected. (3) Implemented the sleep improvement solution "8-week Meditation Program" for the 9 selected individuals and verified its efficacy. (4) Re-acquired Sleep Deviation Score*1 for the 9 individuals. (5) Compared and analyzed the Sleep Deviation Scores of the 9 individuals before and after implementing the meditation program. *1 Sleep Deviation Score web service provided by Brain Sleep (https://brain-sleep.com/sleep-deviation/) Efficacy Verification Results Before the meditation program, the average Sleep Deviation Score for the 9 individuals with severe sleep issues was 38.5, and their average sleep duration was 6 hours and 13 minutes, indicating a state of accumulated sleep debt*2. After the program, the average Sleep Deviation Score improved to 45.4, and the average sleep duration also increased to 6 hours and 43 minutes, an increase of 30 minutes. Regarding the difference between average sleep duration on weekdays and holidays, which is one indicator for measuring the extent of sleep debt, the percentage within the acceptable range of two hours or less was only 44.4% before the program but improved to 88.8% after the program. Furthermore, improvements were observed in productivity, daytime sleepiness, and stress levels before and after the program, as detailed below. *2 A state where daily sleep deprivation accumulates like a debt, potentially causing adverse effects on mind and body. Comment from the Person in Charge / Mr. Kazuki Baba, Suzuki Motor Corporation We started this verification to improve the quality of sleep for Suzuki employees and thereby enhance their QOL and productivity. This service consists of "Sleep Deviation Score," which can quantify any negative feelings about sleep or productivity, and the "Meditation Program" to improve it, and I see value in both. The reason is that, like weight, having the current state and goals as numerical values allows for the selection of concrete and effective solutions, and I believe it also increases continuity. Furthermore, the verification results showed not only numerical and objective improvements as mentioned above before and after the meditation program, but also that over 80% of participants actually experienced the effects, which is another reason. Through this service, we hope to see an increase in sleep literacy and QOL priority in Japan and eventually globally. What is the Health Management Service "Sleep Deviation Score® for Biz"? When evaluating sleep, attention is often focused solely on simple quantitative data such as sleep duration. However, Brain Sleep believes it is important to evaluate sleep from a more multifaceted and comprehensive perspective. Therefore, we created a set of questions that quantify subjective sleep evaluation from a wide range of perspectives, including self-reported symptoms related to sleep and sleep habits. Furthermore, by quantifying this as a "deviation score" familiar to Japanese people, we have built a system that enables the relative sleep status within the entire Japanese population to be understood. This is "Sleep Deviation Score®". Currently, with NTT East as an innovation partner, we are developing the "Sleep Deviation Score for Biz" health management service for corporations. This service visualizes employee "sleep" and their "engagement" with the company, and by comparing it with the national average Sleep Deviation Score, it allows companies to identify new challenges that may not have been apparent internally, thereby improving presenteeism.
