Brain Sleep Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Michibata Kosuke; hereinafter referred to as "Brain Sleep") has provided support for the introduction of "brain-developing sleep," a new program at Stella Preschool, a childcare service operated by Classy Co., Ltd. (Head office: Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture; CEO: Ueda Takayoko; hereinafter referred to as "Classy"), a "comprehensive lifestyle support company" that develops services to organize people's lives from all angles. The program is part of the "serious childcare" guideline set by the school. Brain Sleep aims to change Japan, which has the worst record for children's sleep duration, by promoting "brain-developing sleep" through bedding and services, starting from the childcare setting. background It has been reported that Japanese children, like adults, have the shortest sleep times in the world*1, with a difference of more than 1.5 hours compared to New Zealand, which ranks first in terms of sleep time. Sleep, especially during childhood, has a significant impact on brain development, and research has shown that children who sleep less tend to have smaller brains (hippocampi) than children who sleep more.*2 In addition, the "Children's Sleep Survey" conducted by Brain Sleep in July this year (targeting 5,774 parents with children aged 3 to 9 years old across all 47 prefectures in Japan) confirmed the facts that the average sleep time for Japanese children is more than an hour shorter than the recommended sleep time for their age, and that children with poor sleep habits are more likely to miss elementary or kindergarten school, suffer from colds, and experience physical symptoms such as headaches. Brain Sleep was founded by Seiji Nishino, director of the Stanford University Sleep Biorhythm Laboratory, with the mission of "Live your best life with the best sleep," and has been working on various initiatives to improve sleep hygiene, mainly among adults, but also considers lack of sleep in children to be a major sleep issue for Japanese people. As one solution to such children's sleep issues, the company has focused on the childcare scene in Japan, and has decided to work with Stella Preschool, which provides the highest level of emotional education to children every day, with "serious childcare" as its guideline, to implement a sleep initiative. ■Children's Sleep Survey 2021 website https://brain-sleep.com/sleep-deviation/research2021kids/ *1: Jodi A Mindell, Avi Sadeh, Benjamin Wiegand, Ti Hwei How, Daniel YT Goh. The survey included not only items that directly assessed the sleep state of their children, such as their sleeping habits, but also questions to assess the children's stress, health and motivation levels, emotional and problematic behaviors, and risk of sleep disorders. In addition, the results of the Stella Preschool sleep survey were compared with the results of a sleep survey conducted by Brain Sleep in August of this year (targeting 5,774 parents with children aged 3 to 9 from all 47 prefectures across Japan). *The above data was compared only for children between the ages of 3 and 6, who were subjects of both surveys. Children's sleep habits scores were calculated by Brain Sleep based on the CSHQ (Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire). The higher the score, the more disrupted the child's sleep habits are. Parental perceptions of their children's sleep problems Japanese children have the shortest sleep time in the world, and this issue is becoming more serious every year. The results of a nationwide sleep survey revealed that only 31.3% of people know the fact that Japanese children have the shortest sleep time in the world, suggesting that parents in Japan do not have accurate information about their children's sleep. On the other hand, at Stella Preschool, the percentage of people who knew this fact was high at 59.5%. This result suggests that parents of children at the school are more concerned about their children's sleep than the general population. Children's sleep duration and sleep habits scores Stella Preschool children's sleep duration and sleep habit scores were better than the national data. Stella Preschool children slept 21 minutes longer than the national average, and their sleep habit scores were 3.4 points lower (the lower the score, the better the sleep habits). As mentioned in ① above, at Stella Preschool, parents have a high awareness of their children's sleep issues, which suggests that they may be paying more attention to sleep on a daily basis than average children of the same age. On the other hand, compared to the recommended sleep time of about 11.5 hours for children of the same age, the children at this nursery school are not getting enough sleep, and there is room for further improvement in their sleep environment. We believe that the "brain-developing sleep" program, which is now being promoted as part of "Serious Childcare," will be an opportunity to improve the sleep environment of the children at this nursery school. Brain Sleep considers lack of sleep among children to be one of the major sleep issues in Japan. We will continue to work to resolve children's sleep issues not only in childcare facilities like this one, but also by continuing to conduct educational activities on children's sleep. In addition to providing the program, we also place importance on the lifestyle habits of children, including those at home. We particularly focus on "sleep" because it is closely related to the development of brain function. Good quality sleep creates the information network necessary for learning and memory, and the hippocampus, which controls learning, activates its function during sleep to develop the brain. In order to envision children 20 years from now, we will start with today's sleep and practice "sleep education" for the growth and development of children's minds, bodies, and brains. [Classy Co., Ltd./Stella Preschool] Classy Co., Ltd. is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. As a "comprehensive lifestyle support company," we contribute to society and change the world through the development of four business areas: concierge services that create safe and colorful towns; housekeeping services that increase the productivity of daily life; childcare services that raise people to live on the global stage; and Kurashi Lab, which imagines life in the future. Childcare service: Stella Preschool We have started "serious childcare" to support children's potential and expand the potential of each individual child. In 2020, we will also expand into a new field of sleep education. We are putting into practice "Japan's highest level of emotional education" that cultivates the sensitivity and basic skills of children living around the world earlier than anywhere else.
