Brain Sleep Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Kosuke Michibata; hereinafter referred to as "Brain Sleep") and KINS Co., Ltd. (Head office: Meguro-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Yutaka Shimokawa; hereinafter referred to as "KINS"), which provides comprehensive microbial care services, will begin joint research on the relationship between gut health and sleep. Background of the Initiative Brain Sleep has conducted research primarily with Kosuke Michibata, Representative Director, and Seiji Nishino, Director of the Stanford University Sleep & Circadian Neurobiology Laboratory, who is also its founder and Chief Research Advisor, as well as many sleep specialists. Since its brand launch, KINS has analyzed the resident bacteria data of the skin, scalp, and gut of approximately 15,000 users (as of January 2022) and researched the impact of gut environment disturbances on the body. Preliminary surveys conducted by both Brain Sleep and KINS revealed that many people suffer from sleep problems, indicating a possible correlation between gut health and sleep. Through future joint research, we aim to help everyone achieve healthy daily lives. About the Preliminary Survey In a sleep survey*1 conducted by Brain Sleep, comparing the Sleep Deviation Score® of individuals who reported daily concerns about "diarrhea," "abdominal bloating," and "stomach pain/ache" versus those who did not, the former had an average Sleep Deviation Score approximately 10.7 points lower. This result suggests a relationship between gut health and sleep. Furthermore, an anonymous survey*2 of KINS users revealed that approximately 78% experienced sleep quality issues. Among those who felt they weren't getting enough sleep, 54% reported having acne, whereas about 57% of those who felt no particular sleep issues reported no acne. Regarding bowel movements, 32% of those who felt they weren't getting enough sleep reported having bowel movements every 2-3 days, compared to 21% of those who felt no particular sleep issues. Since disturbances in gut flora are cited as a cause of skin problems and constipation, these results suggest a relationship with sleep. *1: Brain Sleep web survey conducted in January 2022 (N=10,000ss) *2: KINS user survey conducted in December 2021 (N=1,229) About KINS Co., Ltd. KINS Co., Ltd. is a health tech company that supports the care of "bacteria" throughout the body, which governs beauty and health. It was born from the experience of Yutaka Shimokawa, who was originally the director of a medical corporation, treating over 2,500 chronic disease patients with treatments utilizing resident bacteria in the human body and lifestyle habit improvement guidance. While managing the business, Shimokawa extensively read various papers published by domestic and international universities and research institutions, and what particularly caught his eye was the description of "the relationship between health, beauty, and bacteria." Based on this experience, the company provides supplements that support gut health, cosmetics focused on bacterial balance, and test kits to determine the state of bacteria. KINS will continue to aim for a world where "bacterial care is commonplace." When evaluating sleep, attention often focuses solely on simple quantitative data such as sleep duration. However, Brain Sleep believes it is crucial to assess sleep from a more multifaceted and comprehensive perspective. Therefore, we created a set of questions to quantify subjective sleep evaluation from a wide range of viewpoints, including self-reported symptoms and sleep habits. Furthermore, by expressing this as a "deviation score," a concept familiar to Japanese people, we established a system that allows for understanding one's relative sleep state within the entire Japanese population. This is the "Sleep Deviation Score®". Currently, with NTT East as our innovation partner, we offer "Sleep Deviation Score for Biz," a health management service for corporations. This service visualizes employee "sleep" and corporate "engagement," and by comparing with the national average Sleep Deviation Score, it allows companies to identify previously unnoticed issues and improve presenteeism.
