BrainSleep Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Atsushi Hirota; hereinafter "BrainSleep") supported a health management verification focused on sleep (hereinafter "this verification") promoted by "Millennial Innovation for the Next Diverse Society" (hereinafter "MINDS"), a community promoting work style reform for millennials through cross-industry collaboration. The results of this verification showed that continuous sleep improvement behavior contributed to improvements in sleep deviation score*1, sleep quality, reduction of daytime sleepiness, and increased productivity, even when there were no changes in sleep duration or working hours. *1 A method that comprehensively scores sleep status, including sleep habits and sleep debt, as well as productivity, stress levels, and the risk of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS). "Sleep Deviation Score" is a trademark of BrainSleep. Verification Content and Results In this verification, approximately 30 employees from MINDS participating companies (hereinafter "subjects") engaged in sleep improvement activities during the verification period, and their results were compared with the national average before and after the sleep improvement activities. Sleep status was evaluated using BrainSleep Coin*2 as an objective indicator and Sleep Deviation Score for Biz*3 as a subjective indicator. *2 Sleep measurement device & app provided by BrainSleep (https://brain-sleep.com/sleepcoin/ ) *3 Sleep visualization web service provided by BrainSleep (https://brain-sleep.com/sleep-deviation/ ) As a result, ① Improvement trend in all 5 items of the sleep deviation score ② 25-point improvement in subjective evaluation of sleep quality ③ 15-point improvement in daytime sleepiness ④ 3.6-point improvement in productivity (presenteeism). Participants experienced improved physical, mental, and brain performance. Result ① Improvement trend in all 5 items of the sleep deviation score It was found that all five items of the sleep deviation score (sleep quality/sleep habits/sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) risk/productivity/daytime sleepiness/work style/stress) showed an improvement trend after the verification. Before the verification, all items except SAS risk were below the national distribution, but after the verification, three items surpassed it. Result ② 25-point improvement in subjective evaluation of sleep quality Compared to their sleep quality before the implementation, the number of participants who answered that their "sleep quality was good" increased by 25 points, surpassing the national average for Japan. Result ③ 15-point improvement in daytime sleepiness Daytime sleepiness was evaluated on a 4-point scale, with D being the lowest and A being the highest. The percentage of people rated A and B improved by 4 points and 11 points respectively (total 15 points for A+B), from 0% and 21% (total 21% for A+B) before the implementation to 4% and 32% (total 36% for A+B) after the implementation. Result ④ 3.6-point improvement in productivity (presenteeism). Participants experienced improved physical, mental, and brain performance. Productivity (presenteeism) evaluation improved across all items. In particular, mental and brain performance improved by 4.8 to 6.6 points after sleep improvement. Verification Overview Participants: 30 employees from MINDS participating companies (60% male, 70% in their 20s-30s) Period: June 20, 2023 - July 31, 2023 Verification method: "Sleep Deviation Score for Biz" was conducted before and after the period. Sleep status evaluation method: Daily sleep during the verification period was scored using "BrainSleep Coin". Sleep improvement actions: Divided into 3 groups and 5 improvement actions (sleep habits, eating habits, exercise habits) that are expected to affect sleep quality improvement. Improvement actions for each group: A. Sleep Habits: A-1 Improvement of sleep behavior through seminars within "Sleep Deviation Score for Biz" by BrainSleep Co., Ltd. A-2 Improvement of sleep environment through the scent of "MoriLabo Night Care" by S.T. Corporation B. Eating Habits: B-1 Consumption of "Euglena for Body Sleep & Stress W Support Functional Food" by Euglena Co., Ltd. B-2 Consumption of "Sleep Protein" by Self-Care Technologies Inc. C. Exercise Habits: C-1 Implementation of the original customized plan for "Training Program 'THE PERSON Group Personal'" by stadiums Inc. Supplementary Verification Results The subjects of this verification had an average sleep duration that was 10 minutes shorter and an average working time that was approximately 50 minutes longer compared to the national average in Japan. While the average sleep duration and working hours of the subjects remained almost unchanged during the verification period, their sleep deviation score improved by 5 points. This indicates that even without changing the amount of sleep, improving sleep quality can lead to improvements in sleep and, consequently, business performance (presenteeism). Among the improvements, "daytime sleepiness" showed the most significant increase. Daytime sleepiness is an indicator that combines the duration and severity of feeling sleepy during the day, and it affects business performance. It improved by approximately 45 minutes/week per person, which is considered to have contributed to increased productivity. Furthermore, it was found that the higher the frequency of daily measurements using BrainSleep Coin, the greater the improvement in the sleep deviation score. To maximize the effectiveness of health management measures, visualizing daily sleep and devising ways to increase measurement frequency are considered important. When asked about "current company health management measures (multiple answers)", "sleep" was the least implemented at 24% among categories such as "mental health," "exercise," "smoking cessation," "diet," "sleep," "metabolic syndrome prevention," "shoulder stiffness/lower back pain," and "infectious disease prevention." The results of a post-verification survey of participants indicated that there are still few health management measures for sleep improvement within MINDS participating companies. On the other hand, "sleep" had the highest level of interest as a health measure, suggesting that a certain number of employees expect companies to focus on sleep as a health management measure. *Since participants were selected from those interested in this initiative, their level of interest may differ from that of the general public. [Sleep Deviation Score for Biz Base Data Survey Overview] Survey method: Web survey Target area: Nationwide Target audience: Male and female Sample size: n=10,000ss Survey period: January 2023 *For comparisons of sleep deviation scores and scores between groups, one-way ANOVA or t-tests were performed, and a significance level of less than 5% was determined to be a statistically significant difference. *Some participants and survey items were changed from last year's survey. Corporate Executive Voice Health management is said to not only prevent illness but also lead to improved employee engagement and productivity. However, it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of health management measures aimed at improving engagement and productivity, and I feel that there are certain hurdles for companies to implement such large-scale measures. For health management, where evaluation is difficult, it is crucial to conduct PoCs (Proof of Concept), and based on these results, we intend to further implement PoCs and introduce new measures. What is MINDS?
