Brain Sleep Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Atsushi Hirota; hereinafter "Brain Sleep") has developed a sleep improvement program (hereinafter "this program") specifically tailored to the individual sleep issues of the members of the <VARREL> Overwatch department, a professional team in the Japanese e-sports industry. The program was offered from November 8, 2024 to March 11, 2025, and the sleep conditions of each player were monitored*. As a result, improvements were observed in each player's sleep status, which is expected to lead to improved competitive performance. Before the program was offered, the sleep conditions of each player were assessed, and two major sleep problems were clearly identified: "sleep rhythm phase delay" and "increased sleep latency and wakefulness after sleep onset." The monitoring of sleep and the stabilization of each player's sleep status also contributed to an increased awareness of sleep among the players. Furthermore, regarding the "Overwatch Champions Series 2025 - Japan Stage 1 (OWCS Japan)", VARREL advanced from 3rd place to victory. In the subsequent Asian tournament, they achieved the first-ever victory for a Japanese team. It is believed that sleep improvement may contribute to improved competitive performance. *1 International tournament also decided! Providing a uniquely developed sleep improvement program for "pro e-sports players" who don't know their sleep problems! https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000230.000046684.html Background The "e-sports" industry is considered to have many sleep problems due to prolonged screen time, the effects of fast movements and flashy visual/auditory effects during use, and a tendency to adopt a nocturnal lifestyle. Brain Sleep provided this program with the aim of contributing to the improvement of play performance and the stabilization of mental health of "e-sports" players through sleep improvement. Results For the six players who participated in this program, regarding the two previously delayed sleep issues, "sleep rhythm phase delay" and "increased sleep latency and wakefulness after sleep onset," "sleep rhythm advancement" and "sleep latency reduction" were observed. Although wakefulness after sleep onset did not decrease, deep sleep time increased. Furthermore, an improvement in play performance was also confirmed.1. Sleep rhythm advanced by an average of 20 minutes. The average sleep onset time advanced by 48 minutes, and the average wake-up time was delayed by 8 minutes, extending sleep duration by an average of 56 minutes. The sleep midpoint (the middle point of sleep time), an indicator of sleep rhythm, advanced by an average of 20 minutes. This is thought to be a change resulting from increased sleep awareness. 2. Sleep latency shortened by 4.3 minutes, deep sleep duration extended by 8.2 minutes. The average sleep latency was shortened by 4.3 minutes, with 5 out of 6 participants showing improvement. Wakefulness after sleep onset, however, only shortened by 1.5 minutes, showing limited change. 3. Play performance increased to 140%.Through sleep improvement, the aim score*, an indicator of shooting accuracy in shooting games, increased by an average of 50,243 points, also improving play performance. *Aim score in the aiming training game AIMLABS Furthermore, in the "Overwatch Champions Series 2025 - Japan Stage 1 (OWCS Japan)", VARREL dramatically improved from 3rd place to victory, and KSG, who showed the most significant sleep improvement, was selected as the tournament MVP. In the subsequent Asian tournament, they also achieved the first-ever victory for a Japanese team. Overview ① Clarification of sleep conditions before improvementAs a result of clarifying the current sleep conditions using two methods – "Sleep Deviation Score®", a subjective scoring method for overall sleep quality, and "Brain Sleep Coin", an objective sleep measurement device – the following two issues were clearly identified: 1. Sleep rhythm phase delay 2. Increase in sleep latency (time taken to fall asleep after getting into bed) and wakefulness after sleep onset (time spent awake during sleep). ② Implementation of sleep seminars and individual adviceIn addition to providing basic knowledge about sleep and the sleep trends of the entire team, we also gave individualized advice on personalized improvement plans tailored to each individual's sleep challenges. ③ Provision of sleep improvement solutionsAfter introducing Brain Sleep products, including the "Brain Sleep Pillow," we implemented the improvement points proposed in the sleep seminar. We also provided weekly reports on sleep status to help maintain motivation. Comments from Overwatch Division Members After the program concluded, we asked participating members about the changes in their play performance due to improved sleep.・NICO Player: Made better split-second decisions in matches. Sustaining concentration became easier.・KSG Player: Woke up feeling better, and I think I did quite well mentally.
