BrainSleep Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Atsushi Hirota; hereinafter "BrainSleep") regularly verifies and compares objective data between its main product, the "BrainSleep Pillow," a pillow designed for brain rest, and urethane-based pillows, which are mainstream in Japan (hereinafter "general functional pillows"). For the third installment, we focused on "waking up," which directly relates to the perceived quality of sleep, and conducted a study on alertness immediately after waking up (hereinafter "this study"). This study confirmed that the "BrainSleep Pillow" resulted in higher alertness the following morning compared to general functional pillows, even with one hour less sleep. Background of the Study Sleep not only provides physical rest but also serves various other roles, being extremely important for improving brain and body performance during the day. BrainSleep believes that improving sleep quality, not just duration, is the most effective approach to good sleep, and advocates for "sleep that rests the brain." To visualize its effectiveness, we have conducted various comparative studies on bedding and sleep, obtaining objective data related to improved sleep quality by comparing the use of our main product, the "BrainSleep Pillow," with general functional pillows. As a result, we announced in January 2023 that using the "BrainSleep Pillow" increased the "deep sleep ratio*1," and in September 2024, that "fatigue recovery was 116% even with one hour less sleep*2." This study aimed to verify whether the use of the "BrainSleep Pillow" contributes to improving brain performance the next day, using "brain alertness" as an indicator. *1 "BrainSleep Pillow" increases the proportion of deep sleep during the "golden 90 minutes" immediately after falling asleep: https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000146.000046684.html*2 "BrainSleep Pillow" yields 116% fatigue recovery even with one hour less sleep: https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000216.000046684.html Study Details and Results Subjects: 15 men and women in their 20s and 30s (14 valid data sets*3)Test method: A crossover study comparing alertness immediately after waking up the next morning*4, between "7 hours of sleep with a general functional pillow" and "6 hours of sleep with a BrainSleep Pillow."Measurement items: PVT (Psychomotor Vigilance Test)*5, activity meter, questionnaire evaluation using VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) method (OSA Sleep Inventory)*6*3: One subject was excluded due to abnormal data acquisition.*4: Within 5 minutes of waking up.*5: A test that objectively evaluates alertness by measuring the time it takes to react to a target appearing on a screen.*6: A general sleep evaluation method proposed by the Japan Society of Sleep Improvement, statistically scaling sleep sensation.Results:"6 hours of sleep with a BrainSleep Pillow" resulted in 116% higher alertness the next morning than "7 hours of sleep with a general functional pillow." In this study, PVT conducted immediately after waking up the next morning showed that "6 hours of sleep with a BrainSleep Pillow" resulted in a significantly faster reaction time to targets compared to "7 hours of sleep with a general functional pillow." This indicates that using the "BrainSleep Pillow" leads to higher alertness immediately after waking up the next morning, despite one hour less sleep compared to general functional pillows.Consideration:It was found that using the "BrainSleep Pillow," designed for brain rest, improved "alertness" immediately after waking up the next morning, even with one hour less sleep, compared to using a general functional pillow. The first study, which examined "sleep depth," showed that using the "BrainSleep Pillow" increased the proportion of the deepest sleep during the "golden 90 minutes," considered the most important time in sleep, immediately after falling asleep. This suggests that high-quality sleep not only benefits the body but also improves brain performance the next morning. A clear mental state from the moment of waking up is a factor that boosts daily motivation. BrainSleep believes that sleeping with high-quality bedding can help solve various contemporary sleep problems. Sleep is about quality, not just duration. What are the "golden 90 minutes" that determine quality? BrainSleep refers to the approximately 90 minutes immediately after falling asleep, during which the deepest non-REM sleep occurs, as the "golden 90 minutes." During these 90 minutes, five crucial physiological phenomena for sleep are particularly active: "rest for the brain and body," "organization and consolidation of memories," "adjustment of hormone balance," "boosting immunity," and "removal of waste products from the brain."What matters in sleep is "quality, not just duration." For Japanese people, who tend to not get enough sleep, taking a deep and slightly longer initial 90 minutes of sleep leads to improved sleep quality. Even with short sleep, alertness is high! The only pillow with both breathability and a perfect fit.Features of the "BrainSleep Pillow" In addition to the "golden 90 minutes," when the deepest non-REM sleep occurs, maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity within the bed is crucial for good sleep. Made from a unique material and consisting of over 90% air, it prevents heat and moisture from accumulating in the pillow during sleep, creating a comfortable sleep environment.1. Excellent breathability for "cooling the brain, and sleeping faster and deeper"Composed of over 90% air, it prevents heat and moisture generated during sleep from accumulating in the pillow, creating a comfortable sleep environment.2.
